Morikemo (Forest and Wildlife) Nagano
Hello from Nagano !
We are a small group called "Morikemo", which has been established in 2013.
"Mori" means forest and "Kemo" is the front part of the word "Kemono" which means wildlife or beast in Japanese.
Our group leader is a hunter / wildlife research engineer. we also have a forester and two small lot forest owners in our group.
During the process of forestry and wild life management, we get a lot of wood and meat.
But in many cases, they are not completely consumed. A significant part of them are left in the woods to decay !
The worst thing is, that we have a explosion of deer population and a large area of neglected conifer plantations with no stewardship such as thinning, ruining our forest ecosystem. We have to keep on culling and felling no matter we can properly harvest it or not.
We think one of the factor of this problem comes from the ignorance about hunting and forest stewardship.
Hunting and Small lot forestry is a great hobby, but most Japanese don't know the how to's and the joy of it.
Our goal is to educate our local people about the importance and fun of forestry and hunting, so we decided to use Bushcraft as a spice in our workshops. We fell trees, build fires, butcher deer, cook venison, and enjoy it.
If you live near Nagano City and are interested in our events, please email us. (morikemo2014@outlook.jp)
Some of our attendants are families with children aged 7-18. You may bring small children but are responsible for their safety and comfort. it is very cold out in the woods !
Entry fee is about 0 yen (free) to 1,000 yen, including accident insurance. This reasonable price is possible with the support of the Forestry Agency of Japan.
We are planning to hold about one workshop per month.
note: Hunting Law in japan is very strict, so we don't hunt for real in our events. Our leader hunts all of the game.
One member can speak English. He has been in California for five years during childhood.
We are not trained bushcraft instructors. Lets learn together !
